Listening isn’t about waiting for your turn to speak.

It’s about believing the person in front of you. It’s about curiosity, not correction. It’s about hearing the whole story, not just the part that fits the form.

Listening is often labelled a soft skill, but in healthcare it is anything but. It is the foundation of safe and equitable care.

NICE – National Institute for Health and Care Excellence latest quality standard for Rare diseases highlights something people with rare diseases have been saying for years: We are the experts in in our own conditions because we live with it every single day!

When services listen well, care improves. When they do not, people repeat their story, lose trust and carry the emotional burden alone.

Listening isn’t about waiting for your turn to speak. It’s about believing the person in front of you. It’s about curiosity, not correction. It’s about hearing the whole story, not just the part that fits the form.

The quality standard reminds us that listening is clinical, relational, and ethical. What would change in your service if listening was treated as expertise?
