Are GPs aware of the UK Rare Disease Framework?
Most GPs have never read the UK Rare Disease Framework, and that’s not the problem.
Ask them, and most want better rare disease pathways, clearer referrals, practical tools, and a way to spot the signs faster.
What they don’t have is time!
With 3.5 million people in the UK living with a rare condition. How are GPs are meant to catch this in a 10 minute slot, alongside everything else on their list?
So the gap isn’t willingness, it’s support! Here’s what could actually move the needle:
-GP education that fits into real workloads, and not another “mandatory module”.
– Simple referral pathways that remove guesswork.
– Integrated care models that make specialist collaboration easy, as opposed to a chase.
– Patient-led insight built into everyday practice, not just as an afterthought.
GPs aren’t the blocker here; They’re an open door we have yet to walk through.
The Framework won’t shift from policy to practice until we back that openness with real infrastructure.
